Open Platform Day 2 - Evening Presentations

The second evening of presentations for the Open Platform event might have been subtitled "designing with constraints". Quite by chance, all of the presenters focused on the issue of constraints in parametric and computational design, each from a very different perspective. The second evening of presentations for the Open Platform event might have been subtitled "designing with constraints". Quite by chance, all of the presenters focused on the issue of constraints in parametric and computational design, each from a very different perspective.
Hugh Whitehead and his colleagues Martha Tsigkari and Adam Davis (all from Foster + Partners Specialist Modelling Group) discussed the issues surrounding modular construction in concrete and the exigencies of automatic drawing extraction for complex models.
Tomasz Jaskiewicz of the Hyperbody group at TU Delft discussed his research into the Swarm Toolkit, a tool suite for interactively modelling complex physical constraints. He showed the application of this toolkit in projects ranging in scale from pavilions to building proposals to urban master plans.
Sander Boer of Mecanoo Architecten discussed his firm's approach to real-world constraints of structure, function and program in their approach to parametric modelling. Discussing the design of building skins, he argued against the application of parametric tools in all aspects of design. He called instead for using common sense in applying unique features (roofs, entrances, cladding modules) where program or function called for simple solutions.
