SG 2010 GenerativeComponents Training

GenerativeComponents training will not be offered on location at SmartGeometry 2010, but instead will be offered at a variety of locations prior to the start of the SG2010 Workshops including Istanbul, London, and Sydney. Bentley are also offering online training for all SG2010 Workshop applicants regardless of their acceptance into the Workshop. All applicants will receive an email directly from Bentley with information on this offer.

Onsite training sessions are also open to non-SG2010 Workshop Applicants, however SG2010 Workshop Applicants will receive priority access.

The main goal of the GenerativeComponents training workshop is to guide participants to reach a competency and comfort level with this parametric design system that will allow them to:

  • explore their own design challenges;
  • develop parametrically driven solution systems by generating design elements and defining relationships between them; and
  • investigate potential design solutions within or outside of the implicit solution spaces in those systems through
    • parametric manipulation of their parametric designs or
    • modification of the relationships between design elements
This will be achieved by introducing participants to a broad range of functionality in GenerativeComponents and by discussing with participants major ideas of parametric design. The workshop will introduce attendees to two of three main approaches of designing with GenerativeComponents, model-based and script-based. Hands-on participation will be maximized throughout the workshop. The workshop also will provide opportunity to discuss more advanced topics of GenerativeComponents as well as algorithmic and parametric approaches to design problem solving while knowledgeable support is at hand.

This GenerativeComponents workshop will serve as a preparation for SmartGeometry workshop participation in Barcelona in March 2010: http://www.smartgeometry.org/content/smartgeometry-2010-barcelona

After setting up a think-tank to discuss ways for connecting the architecture, engineering and construction industries 'AEC Connect', Dominik Holzer now works as director at 'BVN Architecture' across Australia. Complementing his role as practicing architect, Dominik also lectures at RMIT University in Melbourne and UTS in Sydney.
Prior to moving to Australia, Dominik was an associate at Alsop Architects (UK), he worked with Lars Spuybroek at Nox (NL) and with BKK3 in Vienna (Austria)
In late 2009 Dominik finished his PhD on "Sense-making in Transdisciplinary Design" at the Spatial Information Architecture Lab - SIAL (RMIT University), supervised by Prof. Mark Burry. During his PhD research, Dominik was embedded at the engineering firm Arup where he helped to realise complex structures using parametric design and optioneering in architect-engineers interaction.
Dominik's current focus lies in early-stage collaboration and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) in design practice. Dominik is closely affiliated with the SmartGeometry group by acting as a tutor at their workshop in 2009 and assisting to organise the 2010 conference in Barcelona.
Dominik has presented at various conferences (Caadria, CADfutures, Ecaade, ISEC, Critical Digital) and he has published various papers in journals and conference proceedings. Publications in AD Architectural Design (UK), ARQ (Chile) and AR Architectural Review (Australia) are forthcoming in early to mid 2010.

Non-SG 2010 Workshop Applicants: Please tell about your interests, background, and forward images of precedent work upon registration request

Onur Yüce Gün is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),  Department of Architecture where he got his Master of Science Degree in Design Computation. Prior to his departure to States,  he got his B.Arch degree at Middle East Technical University (METU) as the top of the class.
Onur initiated and directed the Computational Geometry Group of Kohn Pedersen Fox New York, and worked on more than 40 projects of the firm between 2006 and 2009. He concentrated on establishing methods and tool-making for design-build concerns of complex-geometry skyscrapers around the world.
Besides professional practice, he was always involved in teaching. Towards the end of his 3 year position at Pratt Institute in New York, he become the Coordinator of the Digital Futures Group at School of Architecture. He taught in numerous graduate and undergraduate design studios in collaboration with several professors, and taught computational design methods and techniques. He was an invited instructor and critic at institutes including Harvard GSD, Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania. He conducted and taught various workshops around the world. Onur got published and won prizes  in renowned conferences like eCAADe, ACADIA, IASS and presented his work in cities like London, San Francisco, Frankfurt, Munich, Istanbul and New York. His work was exhibited in several exhibitions in Venice, France, Tokyo and Los Angeles (SIGGRAPH).
Onur decided to move and settle down in Istanbul. While teaching at Istanbul Bilgi University, he's currently forming his Computational Design Collaboration laboratory: O-CDC.

Volker Mueller joined Bentley Systems as Research Director for Computational Design in January 2008. His role is identification and pursuit of opportunities for longer range innovation through collaboration with researchers and innovators in academia and practice. His mission is to find solutions for the emerging challenges of forward-looking, ever-evolving design practices. Current focus is early design feedback in tools supporting the design of sustainable infrastructure projects.
Volker has explored GenerativeComponents’ capabilities through project related investigations like rationalization of design surfaces into constructible systems. He has been a GenerativeComponents tutor and senior tutor at innumerable Bentley Systems and SmartGeometry events since 2004, assisted workshops at MIT and Columbia University, and has conducted GenerativeComponents workshops at the University of Pennsylvania, Ball State University, the Ohio State University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Michigan, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Montreal.
Prior to joining Bentley Systems, Volker was for about ten years NBBJ’s Design Technology Manager developing and implementing NBBJ’s design technology strategy, based on BIM technology, with concurrent, collaborative design and Integrated Project Delivery of sustainable projects as guiding principles. Before working for NBBJ, Volker contributed for five years as software developer to a 3D modeling package and transitioned for two years design professionals from manual to digital practice. He earned a Dipl.-Ing. der Architektur degree from the Technische Universität Berlin in 1988, and as a Fulbright Scholar a Master of Architecture degree from the Ohio State University in 1991.
