After four intense days of innovative work, the conference offers an opportunity for critical reflection on the topic of Building the Invisible and the exposition of what has been accomplished in the Workshop. It is an opportunity to open debates, pose questions, challenge orthodoxies, and propose new ideas. The conference will feature invited international keynote speakers showcasing major projects and research from around the globe that mark out the territory of the year’s Challenge. Between keynote presentations it will also feature informal and open discussions between the speakers, invited respondents, leading practitioners, emerging talents in digital design and Cluster participants, offering inside perspectives on how computational design is creating hybrid disciplines.


curved folding

Champions: Gregory Epps + Alex Shiftner

This workshop explores the opportunities that arise from iterative approach to form/function optimisation when working with curved folding. We will use a development process that transitions in and out of the digital realm with the 3D scanner as input mechanism and vinyl cutter/laser cutter as output.

deep surfaces

Champions: Achim Menges + Sean Ahlquist

The aim of the cluster is the rapid development and construction of performative form-active tensile systems. Rather than designing the systems as continuous surface structures (i.e. pretensioned textiles) the cluster aims at developing membranes consisting of discreet elements that respond not only to the flow of structural forces but also to a multitude of other environmental influences. Potentially this strategy may allow inverting the tension system into a self-supporting compression structure.


design to destruction

Champions: Sam Joyce + Al Fisher

The project task is to design and fabricate a full scale 1.2m cantilever out of a single sheet of MDF, milling it using the CNC machines provided, before ultimately carrying out physical load testing to evaluate the design’s performance. During the course of the workshop the project follows the whole design process, right through from conception, design and analysis, to fabrication and finally loading and destruction.


explicit bricks

Champions: Tobias Bonwetsch + Ralph Bartschi

The goal of the workshop is to design a constructive system composed out of uniquely formed building blocks. The architectural potential of the developed system will be tested through applying it on the design and fabrication of a prototypical building element (e.g. a wall).


high tech design / low tech construction

Champions: Juan Subercaseaux + David Kosdruy

This cluster focuses on learning a process that combines the conception of highly evolved parametric models with fast, physical construction of these models. The task is to systematise the translation of these complex geometries into real scale prototypes, using logical geometric thinking together with emergence and self organisation principles.


inflatable fabric envelope

Champions: Axel Killian + Adam Davis

Related to the inflatable kite workshop at MIT a few years back, this cluster proposes an architectural version of it, which would test a range of prototypes using fabric.


manufacturing parametric acoustic surfaces

Champions: Brady Peters + Martin Tamke

The design intention of this workshop is the exploration of new forms and materials of architectural surfaces used to modify acoustic space. Through the linking of acoustic theory, the parametric design of material and geometry, and the digital fabrication of these structures, true "working prototypes" will be created and evaluated.


non-linear systems biology & design

Champions: Jenny Sabin + Peter Lloyd Jones

This workshop will promote and expand the emerging dialogue between architecture and nonlinear systems biology to gain insight into normal and diseased dynamic living systems, develop techniques for digital modeling, and design, fabricate and produce one prototype model as a group. 


parametrics & physical interaction

Champions: Przemyslaw Jaworski + Hugo Mulder + Flora Salim

This cluster is enabling and encouraging the use of physical/ tangible interfaces, sensor devices, and their integration in the design process. As parametric relationships between the virtual and physical reality are bridged and can be simulated, situational variations of parameters that exist in the physical realm can be reflected in the virtual parametric model.


snap fit

Champions: Bruce Bell

This workshop is an experimental study with the aim of designing, prototyping and refining new concrete shuttering and reinforcement components & connections using lazer and 3 axis cutting. The key aim is to achieve a rapid assembly: snap fit, push on and instant connections that will produce a better and more complex end result but reduced site time. To achieve this we will need to harness the potential of the fabrication technique and the properties of the materials: the spring and sharp edge of the steel and flexibility in the timber etc.
